Blog and writer website

A website for a blog, travel journal or author: your stories or books, an about page, events and a newsletter sign-up.

A blog or author website is a home for your words. It might be a travel journal, a food diary, a newsletter archive or the place readers go to learn about your books. Whatever it is, the writing should be easy to read on any screen, the newest piece should be easy to find, and readers should have a simple way to hear when you publish again.

What to put on a blog or writer website

  • A featured piece. Your newest or best story at the top, with a big photo, the title and a line or two to pull readers in.
  • Recent posts. A grid or list with titles, dates and short summaries, and a way to browse by place or topic.
  • About you. A photo and a short, personal bio. Why you write, where you are, what readers will find here.
  • For authors, the books. Covers, a blurb for each, publication dates and where to buy them.
  • Events. Readings, signings, festivals or talks, with dates and places.
  • A newsletter or contact form. A sign-up with just a name and email, or a form for event and press requests. On a published Kodebloc website, these arrive in your Messages inbox and your email.

Tips for your request

  1. Say what you write about. "Slow travel by train through Europe" or "quiet literary novels set by the sea" shapes the look and the sample words.
  2. Ask for a layout that suits reading. A magazine style for a blog with lots of photos, a quiet single column for an author.
  3. Use pages for the main parts. For example Home, Journal and About. A website can have up to 5 pages, and each one gets its own link to share.
  4. Bring your real posts. Paste the title and opening of two or three pieces. Anything you leave out is written as a sample that you must replace before you publish.

Start from a ready-made website

Open either of these as your own copy: a magazine-style travel blog with a big latest story, featured stories, a countries list and a newsletter form, or a literary author website with a new novel, earlier books, events, reading-group questions and a contact form for events and press. The stories and books on them are made up, so replace them with your own. See all templates.

Help readers find your writing

Give your website a clear title and description in Site settings, so search results and shared links show what you write about. Write headings that say what a story is about, not just a clever phrase. Read SEO for beginners for more simple ways to be found.
